Blacksmithing, also known as hand forging, is a traditional form of craftmanship that has been undergoing constant innovation and development since its origins in the Bronze Age. Nowadays, blacksmiths create unique handcrafted pieces that are both attractive and functional. Ranging from artistic objects for everyday use to discreet treasures, the craft of blacksmithing offers an extensive product range and endless creative possibilities. Blacksmithing requires expertise, technique and mastery of tools, some of which have been handed down over centuries or rediscovered through experimentation and the study of historical forging work. Traditional forging is alive and well throughout Switzerland, with around twenty small ateliers employing full-time male and female blacksmiths. Countless others have taken up blacksmithing as a fascinating hobby. Agricultural tools, custom-made grilles and gates and metal sculpture artwork are among the objects being forged by blacksmiths today. This includes the restoration of historically protected metalwork and the reproduction of historical weapons, jewellery and tools for experimental archaeology and connoisseurs.
